Oral surgeons are a type of dentist that performs surgeries of the mouth, including conditions that involve the soft tissue, jaw and face. Oral surgery is more advanced than the types of procedures that are done in a dentist's office. Here are four of the many reasons why a general dentist would refer a patient to an oral surgeon

Why would you need oral surgery as opposed to general dentistry?

1. Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Depending on how your wisdom teeth grow within your mouth, you may be able to see a general dentist to care for them or extract them. If they are impacted, or growing into the jaw or other teeth instead of erupting through the gums, you will likely need oral surgery to remove them. Not removing them could cause tooth loss and decay.

2. Dental Implants

Dental implants are an option for some with tooth loss. It is a form of oral surgery which attaches a false tooth to the jaw with a metal apparatus. Many people may find this to be more appealing than dentures for replacing teeth, as the implants become a part of your mouth over time and it is easier to chew and speak with implants than other replacements.

For some that may want dental implants, they may require a bone graft first. A bone graft fortifies a section of the jaw with either a human or synthetic bone to make implants successful. An oral surgeon will discuss the best option for your particular situation.

3. Cancer

If it is suspected that you may have oral cancer, you will likely be recommended to an oral surgeon. The surgeon will determine where the cancer is located, if it can be operated on, and the best courses of treatment. Along with surgery, other treatments could include radiation or chemotherapy.

4. Sleep Apnea

In severe cases, sleep apnea may be best treated by an oral surgeon. Depending on the type, the surgeon could attach implants that can prevent airways from being restricted, moving the tongue and its adjacent bones and soft tissue into a more optimal position in the mouth, or trimming the tissue around the uvula to make it easier to breathe.
