A dental implant is a reliable option for a tooth replacement, but it can seem like an invasive procedure. Although you will surely be pleased with the results, surgery is a stress-inducing event. However, with the right planning in place, you can alleviate many of your concerns.

How to Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery

1. Follow the Doctor's Instructions

Your surgeon will give you both pre- and post-operation procedures and it is important that you follow them closely. Everyone's plans will be a little different and will vary on conditions such as sedation, known allergies, and how many teeth are being replaced. Therefore, your plan will be unique to you. Post-operation instructions are to ensure the best outcome and the fastest healing times possible. Ask any questions that you may have and bring up any questions and concerns as soon as possible. If you feel that one of the instructions given may be difficult for you, make sure that you discuss it with your surgeon so that an alternative can be achieved.

2. Arrange for Transportation

Even if you are not going to be sedated, there is a chance that the medications you are given, or even just the procedure itself, could make you quite sleepy or sore. It is always a good idea after an oral procedure such as dental implants, that you have a reliable friend or family member drive you back home. Ask the oral surgeon how long the procedure will take so that your ride can be prepared.

3. Have Soft Foods at Home

Your mouth will likely be sore following dental implant surgery, and you need to be mindful of stitches. Foods such as yogurt, ice cream, applesauce, and mashed potatoes are great choices after oral surgery. Keep in mind that you also won't likely be able to or want to drive after the surgery, so you may want to have them stocked up ahead of time.
