When inner tooth material known as pulp becomes infected or irritated, pain results. Toothaches have numerous causes, most of which require the help of a dentist to avoid further pain and infection. Understanding why you're experiencing tooth pain may help you relieve the discomfort and know when to schedule a dental visit.

What Causes Toothaches?

Tooth pain and sensitivity can occur from repetitive actions, such as frequent gum chewing, jaw clenching, and bruxism. These activities stress teeth and wear down enamel, revealing the layer of dentin underneath. Dentin contains tiny tubules that are sensitive to sugar, acid, and temperature changes.

Other toothache causes include injuries, such as fractures or damaged fillings. If a filling wears out or sustains injury-related damage, the underlying pulp may become exposed and vulnerable to bacteria that cause infections.

Once an infection is present, pus-filled pockets, or abscesses, can form next to teeth. Abscesses can also result from severe tooth decay. As bacteria and plaque eat away at tooth material, they infect dentin and pulp, and the resulting swelling can create intense pain.

Serious decay typically requires a root canal, in which a dentist removes the pulp tissue to save the tooth, over a filling. Gum disease can contribute to toothaches and abscesses as well.

How Can You Relieve the Pain?

See a dentist to determine the cause; if it's something serious, it will likely get worse without professional help. While waiting for the appointment, relieve pain with home remedies, such as a saltwater rinse that dislodges stuck food particles, cleans the mouth, and reduces inflammation. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse thoroughly for about a minute while making sure not to swallow any of the solution.

Additional pain-relieving techniques include applying cold compresses in 20-minute intervals to numb the area and reduce swelling. You can also apply a warm peppermint tea bag to the affected area for numbing and soothing benefits, or rinse your mouth with equal parts water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide kills bacteria, lowers inflammation, relieves pain, reduces plaque, and helps gum tissue heal.
