As an adult, you don't expect to have loose teeth. However, without proper dental hygiene, it's possible that you could have a tooth fall out. While your dentist can repair or replace it, there are several steps you can take to prevent this from happening.

Why Are Your Teeth Loose?

1. Gum Disease

Gum disease is the most common reason, and it typically stems from a lack of good oral hygiene. If you don't regularly brush and floss your teeth and visit the dentist twice a year, bacteria and tartar will build up on the teeth. As this buildup worsens, it can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. The gums can become infected, weakening the tissue and bone supporting teeth. A dentist can perform scaling and root planing to treat the gum disease.

2. Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects your bones, making them weaker and more susceptible to breaks. It generally affects the hips, wrists, and spine bones, but it can weaken your jaw bone. Since your jaw anchors your teeth, a weakened jaw may cause teeth to fall out. Talk to your doctor about medication for osteoporisis.

3. Pregnancy

Hormone levels change during pregnancy, affecting the periodontium, which are the bones and ligaments in your mouth that hold your teeth in place. If your periodontium is weak, your teeth will loosen. The problem should resolve once you've given birth, but it's important to visit the dentist during pregnancy to ensure your teeth are healthy.

4. Injury

A blow to the face or mouth can damage your teeth. It can leave them chipped, broken, or loose. If you play contact sports, always wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth. If an injury occurs regardless, a dentist can fix chipped and broken teeth. If one is knocked out, they may recommend a bridge or dental implant.
