Although Dry Needling may seem like a new medical procedure, it has been used since the 1940’s to treat a variety of different conditions and can be especially helpful in coping with pain emanating from trigger points. Here is a little more information about dry needling, and why it may be recommended.

Understanding Dry Needling

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is becoming increasingly popular, and there is good reason why.  While the name may sound scary to some, the benefits far outweigh the fear. Much like acupuncture, dry needling is the process of using very fine needles to relieve pressure or pain from a trigger point in the muscles of the body. Because dry needling doesn’t use any medications, it is considered a very safe alternative therapy for a variety of conditions.

chiropractorChiropractors insert a very small filament needle into a trigger point, where the needle disrupts the tension and pressure within the involved tissues and helps to relax it.  It also returns the tissue to an improved level of function.

What are the benefits of Dry Needling?

Dry needling has been found to reduce pain, increase flexibility, decrease muscle spasms and tightness, improve range of motion and tissue function in patients. It also activates muscles and improves their contraction.

Dry needling also allows treatment of areas that cannot be easily accessed due to the multiple layers of tissue or the depth of tissue.
