Whether you’re an experienced collector or a novice, keeping your stamp collection in pristine condition is of utmost importance. However, removing a stamp from an envelope can be a tricky endeavor. Below, the Randy Scholl Stamp Company in Cincinnati, OH, provides a few tips on how to approach the task.

Brief Guide to Stamp Collections From Envelopes

Should You Remove Stamps From Envelopes?

Stamp CollectionPostal stamps have two different adhesive methods: the traditional “lick and stick” and the modern self-adhesive stickers that have been in circulation since 2004. If you’re interested in its value, dealers agree you should have your stamp appraised before you remove it—some are more valuable when on the original envelope because of their historical significance.

Removing Self-Adhesive Stamps

To remove self-adhesive stamps from an envelope, you will need to use an adhesive thinner. Start by cutting around the envelope until the stamp and only a few inches of the envelope remain. Apply the adhesive thinner to the back of the envelope where the stamp is attached, making sure not to get any on the front of the stamp itself. The thinner will dry quickly—then, with a pair of tweezers, you can slowly peel the stamp away from the surface. Apply a dab of talcum powder to the back to remove its sticky film.

Removing Non-Adhesive Stamps

Lick and stick stamps can be removed by using a bowl of warm water. First, you will need to cut around them, leaving an inch of the envelope to work with. Second, place the envelope side down into a small bowl of warm water and let it sit for 10 minutes. The stamp will begin to curl away from the paper which will allow you to peel it off. Work with light force to prevent tearing. Place the stamps on an absorbent towel to dry.
