Before bringing your stamp collection in for an appraisal, it’s wise to learn what appraisers look for as they determine value. There are a few key characteristics that will affect the price of your collection. Below, Randy Scholl Stamp Company in Cincinnati, OH, shares what influences results in a stamp appraisal.

3 Factors That Affect Value During a Stamp Appraisal

Condition

Design flaws, perforations, edges, and overall condition of the stamp will reflect in its value. Hinge damage or tears, short teeth on the perforations, missing areas, and cancellations on the design–meaning the face of the stamp is barely visible either because of improper storage and handling or damage–are all factors in determining a price. Another quality that impacts condition is the centering of the design. The more centered, the higher grade the stamp will get. If lacking in this area, it will receive a lower value.

Significance

stamp appraisalVarieties that have historical significance or are very difficult to find also add value to your collection. Some stamps may be the only few left in circulation, making them a valuable treasure. For extremely rare types and those that have an important place in history, condition standards may be lenient and certain flaws acceptable.

Adhesives

Stamp hinges, also called mounts, are small, transparent pieces of paper coated with gum, or mild adhesive, used by collectors in albums. Gum also refers to the adhesive on the back of stamps used to affix them to surfaces. Those with original gum receive top marks during stamp appraisals, although this characteristic is rare. For this reason, lightly hinged stamps, particularly those from prior to the 20th century, are acceptable. The grading system for gum takes into account levels of hinging ranging from Never Hinged (NH) with full original gum to Heavy Hinge (HH) with a large part of the hinge on the gum.
