Many factors go into determining the value of a stamp collection. If you inherited one from a relative or are curious about a recently acquired addition, an appraisal can give you the answer. Below are some categories a professional appraiser will look at to come up with a figure.

How Are Stamp Collections Valued?

1. Catalogs

Catalogs are a great jumping off point when researching what your stamp collection is worth. Reference several different pricing sources, but keep in mind that catalogs should only be used to gain a general idea of what a stamp is worth. Just like any other asset, they are subject to price fluctuations.

2. Condition

stamp collectionThe condition of a stamp arguably plays the most important role in determining stamp values. The most enticing models will be clean and undamaged, with even and intact perforations. While mint stamps have the highest value, used ones are often featured in stamp collections as well. In the case of the latter, the cancel, or the mark used by the post office, should be subtle. If it hasn’t been canceled, then it must have the original gum on the back.

3. Packaging

Stamp collections with the highest selling potential had effort put into them as far as acquiring, organizing, and displaying them. Unfortunately, placing the content in boxes or bags will yield little to no value.

4. Date

Earlier stamps are worth much more than modern ones, and the most valuable editions date back prior to World War II. Most U.S. stamps printed within the last seven decades have little value.
