Whether you only browse the web occasionally or you run a home business online, any time you connect to the internet, you need to make sure your network is properly secured. Although computers and routers are already equipped with certain safeguards, here are a few more precautions to take to shield yourself from potential hackers.

How to Protect Your Internet Network

Use a Password for Wi-Fi

Just like your email and any other online account, your Wi-Fi network should be password protected. Doing so allows you to minimize who has access to the connection. In creating your password, incorporate a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols; the more complex, the better.

Encrypt the Network

internetBeyond choosing a complex password, you must also pick an encryption standard. These are the different levels, in order from oldest to newest: Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2), and Wi-Fi Protected Access III (WPA3). Note, WP3 is the most recent, having only been announced in January 2018; however, because it’s so new, most devices are not compatible with it just yet. Choose whichever one is the most recent for your equipment.

Update the Firmware on the Router

Although some are designed to improve stability, many firmware updates are built for security. However, getting notifications for these upgrades can be difficult. If you registered the router with the manufacturer, you should get emails about these enhancements; if not, you’ll need to check their website occasionally and download them manually. If you’re unsure about your router, contact your internet provider for details.
