While normal doors can be picked or broken down by a determined criminal, security doors are designed to stand in place under all but the most extreme circumstances. As security is a priority for every business owner, you should have these commercial doors on every exterior entrance to your building. However, there are many options on the market, so use the tips below to find the right door for your needs.

Shopping Guide for Security Doors

1. Steel vs. Aluminum

The two most popular security materials are steel and aluminum. Steel is the stronger and heavier of the two, so this is a good option for protecting valuable inventory or any space where safety and security are the main concern.

Aluminum is still very strong, but it's more lightweight and affordable. It's also available in attractive designs, so these are the ideal solution for client-facing doors, such as the entrance to a retail shop or office lobby. If you choose aluminum, look for a stronger option with stainless steel mesh and 316 marine-grade metal.

2. Locks

A door is only as secure as its lock. Surface-mounted locks are those that protrude out from the front or back of the door. These can be relatively easily broken off the door with a hammer. Instead, look for a mortise lock, which is inside the door's framework itself. You'll know a door has a high-quality lock if it's backed by a warranty and is made by a reputable manufacturer, such as Horton®, BEA®, or Nabco Gyro Tech®.

3. Frames

Look for a powder-coated frame. This finish will protect the metal from corrosion and UV wear. A painted finish will chip or wear away over time, leaving the metal underneath exposed.

4. Hinges

The hinges you select will depend on the material of the door. Steel doors should have a welded-on pin hinge, which is bolted to the wall and will be able to hold up the weight of the door while remaining secure. Aluminum doors work best with aluminum hinges, which feature a pin that locks into the door frame. This prevents someone from being able to pull the door off its hinges.
