When you sell a car privately, it is your responsibility to handle the vehicle title transfer. The title is an official document that gives crucial identifying information about the vehicle, as well as the names of present and past owners. 1. Complete the Paperwork

First, both buyer and seller will complete the vehicle bill of sale. This form includes basic details about the vehicle, the names and contact information of the buyer and seller, and the selling price. The seller should provide the buyer with the original title. The buyer will also have to complete a vehicle title application, which requires a more detailed profile of the vehicle, such as weight, number of seats, and type of engine. If the car is less than 10 years old, the buyer will need to submit an odometer disclosure statement form, along with the rest of the paperwork; you can get this form from your local licensing office.

2. Have the Application Notarized

The title application must be notarized or signed in front of an agent at a licensing office. Be sure to bring along a state-issued identification card to verify your identity.

3. Submit Forms & Payment

Finally, turn the forms in to your local licensing office. There is a $12 filing fee, but confirm the amount with the licensing office just to make sure that there are no additional fees or taxes and that the price has not changed. You will need to turn in the old license plates and be issued new ones, which should be put on the vehicle immediately. It will take eight to 10 weeks for the new title to arrive.
