You rely on your water heater to provide you with a warm or hot supply for tasks like showering, washing dishes, and doing laundry. As such, it can be a significant inconvenience when the device stops functioning correctly. Here are a few signs your water heater requires the attention of a plumbing service

How to Tell if Your Water Heater Needs Repairs

1. Discolored Water

Sometimes, sediment can get into the appliance and cause problems. You may notice brown or rust-colored water spurting out of the faucet fast, and the liquid might have dark particles in it. Your supply may also taste or smell metallic.

In this case, a plumbing service can clean the hot water tank parts or inspect the tank for rust. They can also perform a sediment flush to increase the life of the appliance and restore the water’s clarity.

2. Inconsistent Water Temperatures

If you experience uneven or rapidly changing water temperatures, you may have excessive mineral deposits in your tank. Minerals build up over time and pile on water heating elements.

If the issue is solely water not remaining hot, one of the heating elements may not work. In this case, a plumbing service can replace the part to solve the issue. However, if your water heater is old—you've had it at least 8 to 12 years—the appliance will likely require frequent repairs, making a new heater a more cost-effective investment.

3. Odd Noises

It is normal for a water heater to make some noise, but there should not be loud bangs, pops, or sizzles. If you hear these sounds coming from the appliance, they could be the result of too many mineral deposits or a broken dip tube.

The movement that causes these noises can weaken the structure of the appliance and lead to leaking. Having a professional inspect the heater as soon as possible can save time and money because they'll flush the water out of the tank before it sustains any structural damage.
