A boom lift, also known as a scissor lift, is a large piece of heavy-duty equipment that can be challenging to relocate. As such, whether you're transporting this machine between jobs or need to move it to a new location on the same site, you'll need to follow the appropriate protocols. For safe equipment moving, practice these tips.

Do:

Use tie-downs.

Once the machine is on the trailer, you must secure it in place. To do this, use chains or nylon straps to tie the equipment down. You'll need at least two to be tied over each side of the lift so each corner of the machine has its own anchor point.

Retract and lock the lift.

Begin by retracting the lift so it's completely lowered and folded. Also, if it has a 360-degree turntable, lock it so it won't rotate during transport. A swinging lift could flip your tow truck, hurt passersby, or damage the lift and its surroundings.

Don't:

Assume all lifts are the same.

Take the time to research the equipment before operating or moving it, even if you've worked with other scissor lifts before. Each one may have special instructions for safely moving it or locking it in place during transport. Read the operation manual carefully and conduct an equipment inspection before you begin.

Move it alone.

Equipment moving should always be done by a team of experienced professionals, whether you're loading it onto a trailer or driving it across the site. Have at least two spotters who can monitor the driver's blind spots, warn others to get out of the way, and guide the driver around anything that can't be moved.
