Like most machines, computers generate heat while in use. Although they’re designed for ventilation and heat dissipation, there are instances that can cause them to warm up too quickly before they get a chance to cool down. It could be that the vents are blocked, there’s too much processing activity, or the cooling system itself is damaged. Resolving the first two can usually be done at home, but if the issue is the latter, it will require professional computer repair. Aside from clearing the vents and managing the processing activity, another way to prevent the issue is to keep an eye out for the following warning signs.

Computer Repair 101: How to Detect Overheating

1. Loud, Overactive Fan

computer repairThe first sign of overheating is usually a very loud fan. Although it is supposed to run, it shouldn’t be excessively loud. This is often tied to clogged vents and ports. A can of compressed air often does the trick, but for stubborn bits of dust, use a small computer vacuum with a brush attachment.

2. Warming Up

If your computer feels warmer than usual, that means it’s starting to overheat. For laptops, you’ll likely feel it in the keyboard since it’s all one unit. However, with desktops, listen for the fan getting louder. If it is, put your hand near the back of the tower to check for warmth. Clear the vents if necessary. If there's no improvement, it may be linked to the computer activity.

3. Lagging Performance

If your computer seems slower than usual as well as hot, this is often caused by excessive activity. First, reduce the number of programs you’re using; if that doesn’t dramatically improve things, restart your computer. If it is a persistent problem, you may need to upgrade the RAM or hard drive capacity.

4. Lines on the Screen

When there are pixelated streaks running across the screen, the video card is probably heating up. To confirm whether this is true, have a computer repair company examine it. If the video card is to blame, it will need to be replaced.

5. Crashing

Finally, a drastic sign of overheating is when your computer abruptly shuts down. While it could be indicative of another problem, it may be that the cooling system is damaged or malfunctioning. Either way, have it taken to a computer repair specialist ASAP.
