When your home uses gas, you have a convenient heat and power source. As a safe as gas is, there are instances when a fuel leak happens, especially if you need furnace repair or there’s a problem with the gas line. Below is a brief guide on what to do if there is an issue.

The Basics of a Fuel Leak

Causes & Signs

A gas leak occurs when there’s damage to a gas line or pipe, or gas-based appliances are degrading and corroding, letting gas leak out when they’re in use. Other reasons include poor ventilation around equipment or poor installation of lines and appliances. Regular inspections and quality maintenance practices lower the risk of a problem.

One of the most obvious signs of a leak is a sulfur or rotten egg smell. Small leaks may not produce noticeable odors, but there are other ways to know. Check the gas line first for a hissing sound or a white dust cloud. You may even see a damaged gas pipe—a clear sign you need to call for help for furnace repair and gas line maintenance. In some cases your utility bill may be on the rise due to escaping fuel.

Some may feel disoriented and even start to display flu-like systems like headaches, respiratory distress, and eye and throat irritation; while others report a reduction in appetite, excess nosebleeds, and ringing in the ears. Even your pets can be affected and show signs of lethargy and stomach troubles.

Steps to Take

If you suspect you have a fuel leak, leave the property immediately and call either the fire department or your utility company’s emergency line once you are safely away from the house. Calling from the area where the leak is can ignite the gas and cause a fire. Leave doors and windows open as you wait for the utility company to arrive.

For minor leaks, you still need to call for help so that authorities can inspect for the source. You can turn off the pilot light to your furnace or water heater immediately before exiting the property. Do not try to find or repair the leak yourself, and refrain from turning on lights and other appliances. Inspectors will tell you when it is safe to return to the home. If you or family members feel ill, it is best to be assessed by a doctor.
