After a successful school year, your children should continue practicing their string instruments during summer break. Daily practice of these musical instruments will allow them to excel in the school orchestra by the fall. Here are several tips to keep them dedicated during the warmer months of the year.

What Are Some Useful Summertime Practice Tips?

1. Establish a Schedule

Once your child has a schedule, practice will become part of their routine. It only takes 20 minutes for your child to run through scales, play a favorite piece, and practice fundamentals. Find a convenient time that doesn’t interfere with summer activities, such as just after breakfast. Your child won’t have to worry about any interruptions later and will start their day feeling accomplished.

2. Maintain the Instrument

Having the musical instrument in an accessible area will encourage your child to play and care for it. Ensure the violin, cello, or viola is kept indoors in its case so that humidity and high temperatures won’t harm the instrument or bow. Keep the instrument out of direct sunlight because UV rays can melt and harm the varnish. Never leave your instrument in a hot car!  Show your child how to wipe dust and debris off the instrument after each practice.

3. Take Virtual Lessons

Nothing can replace the value of a skilled instructor. Check for listings at your local musical instrument shop or school music teacher. After you find the right teacher, your child can connect with the teacher in-person or virtually. The instructor can assess their playing, share new techniques, and provide valuable practice advice to use between lessons.

4. Encourage Group Sessions

Playing with others is one of the most rewarding aspects of music. Invite a friend over to practice with your child (try practicing outdoors for a new twist!) or enroll them in a summer orchestra or music camp. If they feel more comfortable with a virtual setting, send their friends a link to a group call so that they can all practice together. These activities will allow your child to explore new musical pieces or inspire them to create their own.

5. Add Music to Every-Day Life

Spend time listening to music, watch a professional perform and attend concerts.  Summer is a great time to see your local orchestra perform outdoor concerts.
