Whether you recently picked up a bow for the first time or have become proficient on the violin, it’s a special feeling to be able to celebrate the holidays with your music. While Tchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah are grand, complex seasonal pieces featuring strings, it’s also possible to adapt simpler songs for your solo instrument. Here’s a small selection of timeless classics to play for your loved ones this Christmas.

3 Pieces of Christmas Music to Play on the Violin

1. “Silent Night”

Written in 1818, “Silent Night” is likely the most famous Christmas hymn. It’s been performed by countless carolers and famous singers like Elvis and Bing Crosby.

When performing the song, think of it as a lullaby. The dotted rhythms aren’t the easiest to get started with, but its long notes are a great opportunity to practice vibrato.

2. “Jingle Bell Rock”

violin

This 1957 pop classic will liven up the pace after performing more traditional hymns. The melody in C major and the suggestion of the rocking beat are strong enough to engage any holiday party or family gathering, and it's easy to sing along to.

3. “Carol of the Bells”

This piece finds a festive balance between a lively, joyous rhythm and the minor-key solemnity of the season. Its melody mimics the ringing of bells in an almost hypnotic fashion, as the bow is used in light and quick strokes.
