Violins are carefully crafted to create their signature sounds. They’re composed of fine, sensitive wood. As a result, slight changes to its set-up and care can impact tone, playability, and value. If you’ve recently started playing, adopt the following best practices right away. If you've been playing for a while and aren't doing these things, today is a great day to start!
Tips to help Care for a Violin (or any bowed string instrument)
1. Wipe Off Rosin
Rosin is applied to the bow hair to create friction as it runs across the strings. This creates sound. Rosin residue on the violin’s strings and body can become sticky, collect dirt, and build up over time which will deaden your sound. Wiping it daily with a microfiber cloth will prevent this from happening.
2. Keep it in the Case
When you’re not using your violin, keep it in its case and latched. It only takes one bump to send it clattering to the floor, resulting in cracks or broken parts.
3. Use a Humidifier During Winter
Cold temperatures and home heaters lower the amount of moisture in the air. When this happens, your violin’s wood dries out and it is possible that it may crack. Invest in a humidifier to use in the area the violin is stored. This appliance will add a fine mist into the air to increase humidity levels. 30%-40% humidity is ideal for these instruments. Another option would be to purchase a case humidifier which will help, especially if you travel with your instrument.
