Whether you’re new to the instrument or have been playing for decades, flying with a violin can be stressful. Use these top tips to help you keep your precious instrument safe and sound throughout your journey.

How to Successfully Fly With a Violin

1. Check the Airline’s Policy

Before you buy tickets and before you even make solid plans to fly, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the airline’s policies regarding flying with instruments. Some may have specific guidelines on how to pack your violin or how it’s allowed to be stowed or checked. Other airlines may require you to purchase extra services in order to fly. Whatever the details are, you don’t want to be caught unaware when you show up at the airport, so learn them inside and out ahead of time.

2. Use a Case with Suspension

Always try to carry on your violin.  It is never a good idea to check it with your luggage.  If it is absolutely necessary to check it, use a strong solid case with suspension. This will offer the instrument more support and protection, and it will lessen the impact of changes in humidity and pressure. You’ll also want to put “Fragile” stickers on the case to communicate how delicate it is. To protect your instrument while it’s in the case, you should slightly loosen the strings.  Make sure there is nothing loose in the case that will damage the instrument as well.

3. Consider an Extra Seat

If you’ve done all your research and carefully packed your instrument, but you’re still worried about if it will survive the trip, consider buying an extra seat to stow it in. The process for this will vary depending on the airline, but it’s the best way to ensure that the violin is treated well throughout the journey.  This is often the chosen route to fly with a cello .
