Giving your child the opportunity to play a string instrument can teach discipline and ignite a love for music they’ll carry throughout their lives. However, if your children are too young to decide for themselves, selecting a musical instrument to get them started can be confusing. Here's some tips to consider when selecting a string instrument for your child.

What Factors Should You Consider When Choosing a String Instrument?

1. Your Child’s Interest

Your child might be willing to take lessons and practice, but if they’re not interested in the instrument, they’ll likely stop playing at some point. You might love the cello, but your child might be more interested in the viola or violin. Show them videos of musicians playing and ask what they’re most drawn toward before making a decision.  Or even better, go see a local live orchestra and discuss their favorite instrument after the performance!

2. The Instrument’s Size

String instruments come in fractional sizes and are designed for children. With your teacher or a knowledgeable string instrument store, determine the correct size for your child before renting or buying.  Even if you are just "trying out" an instrument, it is very important to have the correct size in order to have success!  As your child grows, the size of their instrument will as well.

3. Practical Concerns

Violins and violas are small and easy to transport, while cellos can be much more challenging. A child’s cello can take up the entire backseat, which can make taking them to music lessons inconvenient. These concerns may become more important as your child ages. For instance, moving upright basses can be inconvenient for adults. While these practical considerations are important, they shouldn’t overshadow your child’s interest in an instrument.

4. Cost

Investing in your child’s musical training can be expensive, so cost may be a factor. Fortunately, many string shops offer very affordable rental instruments to get you started.  They may also have purchase programs with a trade-in option that is very convenient and cost effective as your child grows and progresses as a player.
