A violin bow is one of a musician’s hardest-working tools, which is why the best ones are built using high-quality materials and designs that are sure to last for many years. However, like any piece of musical equipment, they’ll require maintenance over time.  The hairs break down with use. Here are a few signs that it’s time to rehair your bow, along with a few tips to keep it in great condition for a long time to come.

What Are the Signs You Need to Rehair Your Bow?

Over time, the horsehairs of the bow can weaken, break down, and stretch out especially when it is used frequently. This can lead to an inability to create a smooth, full sound and grip or hold rosin. If you notice that the hair is also frequently breaking, then it is time to get it rehaired.

To create the right sound, your bow should have a good amount of tension on the hair. If the hair is too loose or too tight, you may have difficulty producing sustained notes or the desired sound. If you notice that the tension is not correct, it may be time to get your bow rehaired.

If you find you need to use increasing amounts of rosin on your bow to get good tone and string grip out of your violin, it’s a sign that the horsehair has worn smooth and can no longer generate sufficient friction on the strings. This is a clear sign that it’s time to rehair it.

How Do You Care for Your Bow?

To get the best sound out of your bow and prevent warping and damage to the horsehair, a cardinal rule of violin, viola, or cello bow care is to loosen the hair after every time you play. In addition, it’s a good idea to wipe the stick down after use to remove dust and rosin particles which can build up on the stick and frog. You should also avoid touching the horsehair with your fingers, as perspiration and oil on the fingertips can cause the hair to not accept the rosin in those areas touched.  Always have a reputable luthier rehair your bow.  A typical player can expect to have their bows rehaired every 6 - 12 months depending on how much it is used.
