As an adult with a hectic schedule, finding time to learn a new skill isn’t always easy. If you’re beginning to play a string instrument such as the  violin, it’s important to have patience and put in a lot of effort at the start, as it can take many months to learn the basics. As you embark on your musical journey, keep the following tips in mind.

A Guide to Learning the Violin as an Adult

1. Purchase or Rent

Buy or rent an adult or full-sized violin, along with essentials such as a case, bow, rosin, music stand, and shoulder rest. They come in many different sizes, but an adult generally needs a 4/4 option. There is no need to purchase an expensive violin at the beginning, as you want to get a feel for the instrument to decide if you want to continue pursuing the hobby. However, it is extremely important to have an instrument that is properly set-up in order to have success in learning.   If you’re not ready to buy one, many music stores offer rentals.

2. Hire a Private Instructor & Record Your Sessions

violinsWork one-on-one with an instructor (typically 30-60 minutes  a week).  Don’t try learning on your own!  Record your lessons with your phone’s video camera or another device so you can review your sessions. Watching your lessons makes it easier to correct your form and find other areas to improve while practicing at home. It also provides a different perspective on the sounds you are producing.

3. Carve Out Practice Time Into Daily Routine

Make time for practice when you have spare moments. Watch the lessons on your phone using earbuds on your way to work, if you commute by train. If there's a music studio rental space near your job, consider going there to practice during your lunch hour. All those minutes add up quickly, and reviewing will ensure you retain the information you learned.
