The violin is an instrument with a long history dating back to the middle ages. Throughout history, many masters have played the instrument, and famous violinists still draw large audiences to this day. Modern musicians are inspired by those who have come before, including these famous classical violinists.

Classical Composers who were Violinists

1. Antonio Vivaldi

Best known for the violin concerti “Four Seasons,” Vivaldi was both a composer and music teacher. Additionally, he served as a Roman Catholic priest. Between the late 1600s and mid-1700s, Vivaldi composed nearly 300 concertos for string instruments.

2. Johann Sebastian Bach

violinA contemporary of Vivaldi, Bach composed more than 200 cantatas and also played in orchestras. Playing his “Double Concerto in D minor for 2 Violins”  with another violinist is still regarded as a rite of passage for young players, and many of his pieces pave the way for developing technique.

3. Niccolò Paganini

Nearly a century after Bach and Vivaldi came Paganini, whose rare disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, weakened his connective tissue and led to increased flexibility. As a result, he could achieve various positions and perform double stops with greater ease, which enabled him to play exceedingly difficult pieces.  His compositions comprise some of the most well-known and difficult works in violin literature.

4. Henryk Wieniawski

Wieniawski was a nineteenth-century violinist who first made his mark on the musical world at the age of 13. It was then that he began performing with his brother, who was a pianist. In addition to touring the world, he also composed many works for the violin, including his “Concerto in D minor,” which is still widely performed today.

5. Pablo de Sarasate

This Spanish-born violinist and composer lived from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, and is best known for playing opera music, such as “Concert Fantasy on Carmen.” While touring, the musician was influenced by the sounds of the Mediterranean, which he infused in his classical pieces.
