Learning an instrument, such as the violin or cello, has many benefits for kids, which is why music plays a large part of many school programs. However, many people don’t understand how playing a musical instrument specifically can be helpful for children in every demographic. This guide will discuss some of the advantages of teaching music to students.

How Kids Benefit From Music Programs at Schools

1. Improves Reading

Research has shown that playing a musical instrument can help all kids read at their grade level. This is because music lessons teach children skills that relate to literacy, including how to understand and appreciate rhythm and sounds.

violinMusic programs also increase students’ internal motivation, maturity and independence, inspiring them to work harder in their other classes. This is especially important for families whose children man not enjoy just the 3 R’s.

2. Strengthens Children’s Brain Structure & Decision-Making

Studies have found that two years or more of music instruction can change the structure of the brain’s white matter, which is responsible for carrying signals through the brain. Additionally, playing an instrument can boost decision-making capabilities and help with impulse control.

Music instruction aids in developing the parts of the brain associated with language, reading, speech perception, and sound processing, helping children thrive in school.

3. Increases IQ Scores

E. Glenn Schellenberg, a researcher at the University of Toronto, conducted a study on 132 first-graders to determine if music can make kids smarter. He assigned the children two different types of lessons, including drama, music, and keyboard. The study found that students who took music instruction saw a greater increase in IQ scores than the kids from other groups. Finally, music lessons are an excellent early intervention tool for children with reading disabilities

4. Confidence and Success Building

Exploration through music engages children which ultimately helps to build confidence, gain self-satisfaction, and achieve success.
