Whether it's that's been in the family for ages, or it's a pet project you've only taken on recently, if you're restoring a car, finding the right auto parts can be difficult. Thankfully, there are many options to find what you need, such as a salvage yard. If you don't have much experience buying parts or even just navigating the place, here's some advice.

How to Get What You Want from Salvage Yards

1. Research Compatible Parts

Although every car manufacturer has some unique parts designed specifically for their own company, significantly more parts can be used for a wide range of vehicles. When you open the hood or look behind the frame, many components could work with vastly different cars.

This includes everything from headlights to drivetrain pieces. So, take the time to cross-check which car parts from other manufacturers could be used interchangeably with yours.

2. Call Ahead

Once you have an idea of what you need, call the salvage yard directly before you head out. You won't be the first person to ask about auto parts, and their employees usually have a basic working knowledge of cars to help you. Of course, they'll also have access to their inventory so you can request something specifically if necessary.

3. Know Your VIN Number

If you're relatively new to everything and open to finding as many possible parts as you need, give the salesperson at the salvage yard your car's vehicle identification number. More commonly referred to simply as "VIN," this number reveals so much about your vehicle, such as the make and model, the transmission type, and any other specifications. From there, the salesperson can draw up a list of compatible parts in their inventory.
