Spiders consume various insects, including flies and mosquitoes, making them welcome additions to any yard. However, you don’t necessarily want the eight-legged creatures in your home, especially if their bites can cause health problems. Whether you want to increase your pest control efforts or simply learn more about what spider species live in the Old North State, use this guide to get started.

What Spiders Are Found in North Carolina?

1. Wolf Spider

The wolf spider hunts prey rather than using webs. Species range from half an inch to 2 inches long and are named for their hairy bodies. Their hair color could be orange-brown, gray, or black, and some feature stripes or splotches for camouflage purposes.

The spider's bite forms an itchy welt that requires disinfecting and usually goes away in a few days. However, you may experience an allergic reaction, which can cause lip swelling, dizziness, hives, and breathing difficulties.

2. Black Widow

Female black widow spiders do bite, which is why they feature red hourglass shapes on their abdomens to indicate their poisonous nature to predators. These spiders have roundish, black bodies and are typically 1.5 inches long.

Their bites are painful but usually not fatal as long as you seek immediate medical attention. You may experience symptoms after a bite, such as fever, sweating, nausea, and higher blood pressure.

3. Hobo Spider

The hobo spider is the most inconspicuous, only reaching between a quarter to a half an inch in length and blending in with its light brown color. Like black widow and wolf spiders, these aren't aggressive unless they're provoked.

Their bites produce a pinprick feeling and require cleaning with soap and water. Swollen bites typically subside with cold packs, though an allergic reaction can cause hives, severe swelling, and breathing problems that require medical attention.
