If you notice signs of misalignment in your child’s teeth, they may need braces to correct the issue. More than merely an aesthetic issue, the problem can put your little one at greater risk of getting cavities, as it becomes more difficult to brush and properly clean their teeth. However, how do you know when is the right time to seek orthodontic treatment?

Phase I: Early Evaluation & Intervention

Orthodontists recommend children receive an evaluation around age seven when their first permanent teeth have erupted. At this time, they can check jaw alignment and other issues that may require treatment. Between the ages of seven and 10, kids’ jaws are still growing, so they’re more receptive to corrective solutions.

Instead, the doctor uses corrective devices to fix jaw misalignment and other malformations, which can make future solutions more effective. It can also improve speech and eliminate the possibility of oral surgery later in life.

Phase II: Braces

Some children receive Phase I treatment while others receive only Phase II, which is the application of braces. The average age for kids to get them is between 10 and 14 after all their permanent teeth are in place. While traditional options involve metal brackets and wires, there are a variety of clear, invisible choices available today, which can make the process more bearable.

Most children will wear braces for one to two years or more, depending on the severity of the misalignment and whether they received Phase I treatment. Unless your child requires early intervention, your orthodontist will probably recommend waiting until they’re at least 10 years old before getting them.
