Cremation is a common alternative to a casket burial. If you like the idea of having your loved one close by at all times, cremation may bring you comfort. Many people have questions about evaluating and displaying cremation urns. This guide explains what you should know about this process.

A Guide to Cremation Urns

How to Pick the Right Urn

There are several factors to consider when choosing a cremation urn. First, decide what size of container you'd like to have. Some people like large, ornate urns that they can incorporate into their home decor, while others prefer small, modest containers that don't draw attention. As a rule, you'll want to allocate one cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight.

Once you've decided on a size, think about the color and material. Many people like to choose colors that match their home if they want to display the urn. Alternatively, you might choose a color or style that has special meaning for the deceased person. For materials, urns come in many types. Metal, wood, resin, and stone are just a few examples.

How to Transfer the Ashes

When you receive the ashes from the crematorium, they'll be housed in a plastic bag inside of a temporary container. The heavy-duty bag is capable of protecting the ashes from the elements. Simply pull the bag of ashes outside of the temporary container and place the bag inside of the urn. Don't put the ashes into the urn without the bag, as they'll be unprotected.

How to Display the Urn

Displaying the urn is a matter of preference. Some people choose to keep the urn in a private place for personal viewing, while others prefer to incorporate the urn into their home decor. You can display the urn on a fireplace mantle, a bookshelf, a table, or some other prominent place. Finally, if you don't want to keep the urn at home, you can display it at a columbarium. These facilities are designed for showcasing cremation urns.
