The ocean ecosystem is truly unlike anything we see on dry land. Being able to take a peek at the wondrous underwater flora and fauna while snorkeling is an opportunity that should not be missed. The beautiful waters surrounding the island of Oahu are home to a wide array of marine life. Here are just some of the species you may encounter while taking a look beneath the waves.

What to Look for While Snorkeling in Hawaii

1. Fish

Around 25% of the fish found in the waters around Hawaii are unique to the region, like the millet butterflyfish and the saddle wrasse. Seeing these brilliantly colored fish will make your snorkeling experience one of a kind. Other species such as Hawaii’s state fish, the reef triggerfish or humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, may not be endemic to the region, but are still an integral part of the ecosystem and a spectacle to behold while snorkeling.

snorkeling2. Coral

Much of Hawaii’s coral isn’t the bright pink and purple variety you may see in other seas. Instead, you’ll see rockier coral because of the relatively young age of the islands’ volcanoes. But even though the colors may be a bit more muted, the coral environments are rich with marine life.

3. Invertebrates

Invertebrates may not have backbones, but they’re tough, and often gorgeous, denizens of the ocean. Around 20% of Hawaii’s invertebrate population is unique to the region. While snorkeling, you may see sponges, urchins, and sea cucumbers. One of the most well known invertebrates of Hawaii, the reticulated cowry, is a vividly colored snail commonly found on rocky shorelines.
