Hawaii is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including an abundance of beautiful ocean life. Taking a dolphin tour or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters is the perfect way to experience them firsthand. Before you head out on your trip, take a look at the following three fun facts, so you can wow others with your marine education.

Fun Marine Education Facts About Hawaii’s Ocean Life

1. Humpback Whales Winter There

marine educationDo you spend the winter wishing you were enjoying a tropical beach? Humpback whales don’t like the cold either, which is why they migrate from Alaska to Hawaii each fall. This swim takes them about six to eight weeks to complete, and that’s only if they don’t stop for too many breaks! After swimming about 6,000 miles, they spend the winter in the waters of the Aloha State mating and giving birth.

2. About a Quarter of Hawaii’s Fish Are Native

Did you know 20% of the fish found in Hawaiian waters can’t be found anywhere else? These include the bandit angelfish, which is recognizable by its clear stripe pattern. Snorkeling through Hawaii waters gives you the opportunity to see many animals you couldn’t see in the wild anyplace else.

3. The State Fish Has a Really Long Name

The state fish is the Hawaiian reef triggerfish, although its Hawaiian name is humuhumunukunukuapua‘a. It has a nose like a pig and is actually said to make grunting noises when caught or defending itself. Funnily enough, despite its status, it isn’t one of Hawaii’s many native species.
