With the summer heat, you've probably been relying more on your AC. While some issues with air conditioning may be obvious, others can be more subtle while still causing significant problems. One of these that may require AC repair is short-cycling, where the unit turns on and off more frequently than it should.

Short-Cycling Problems

Short-cycling refers to when an HVAC unit becomes stuck in the start-up cycle. When in this cycle, it will turn off and on with high frequency, which means that the unit never reaches a complete cooling cycle.

When an HVAC is working optimally, the temperature gauge will tell the compressor when the desired temperature is reached. During short-cycling, this never happens, which causes the compressor to work harder.

Eventually, this can lead to higher energy costs and, if left unfixed, compressor failure.

Causes of Short-Cycling

There are several potential causes for short-cycling. One of the most common is a clogged air filter. You should check to make sure the filter is clean and regularly change your air filter, as well. Typically, an air filter should be changed every 1-3 months, depending on how much the AC is being used.

Potential leaks that have caused a low refrigerant level can also be at the root of this issue. Additionally, if a thermostat is innacurately measuring temperatures, then this can also cause short-cycling.  If a leak or a miscalibrated thermostat is suspected, you will need AC repair to fix it.

Finally, having an AC unit that is the wrong size for your space can also cause short cycling. Talk to your HVAC contractor about whether your unit is oversized for your home. You may need to install a smaller-sized unit to avoid short-cycling.

Prevention

The best way to prevent short-cycling, and all HVAC issues, is through regular maintenance and professional AC repairs when needed. In addition to changing the air filter, you should also have your HVAC unit routinely cleaned by your HVAC contractor. This should occur at least once a year, but before every season is recommended.

When you notice unexpectedly higher energy bills or any other issues, always contact your HVAC contractor as soon as possible.
