It’s easy to take your vision for granted. Even if you rely on glasses or contact lenses, though, your eyes are two of the most amazing organs in the body. Here are just a few fascinating facts about the human eye so you can appreciate all that yours do.

Did You Know These Fun Facts About Vision?

1. Blinking Provides a Reprieve

The average person blinks between 15 and 20 times per minute, or up to 1,200 times per hour. While these figures may not be all that surprising, what happens when you do blink is. Researchers have found that blinking essentially switches the brain into an idle state. Though this miniature reprieve lasts for a fraction of a second, it’s enough to help the brain recharge itself.

2. Eyeball Transplants Are Still Far Off

visionAlthough it’s possible to replace certain components of the eye, like the cornea, medical science does not yet allow for total eye transplants. Vision is such a demanding task that, unlike other processes, it requires both halves of the brain. And the optic nerve, which facilitates all of it, is too complicated to restructure using current technology.

3. Every Eye Has a Blind Spot

In the back of the retina, where the optic nerve attaches to the brain, there is a small blind spot. Although you can take a vision test to find your blind spots, they're not typically noticeable because the eyes compensate for each other and automatically fill in the blank spaces when they're both open.

Despite how amazing the eyes are, they still require quality care. Even those with perfect vision should visit an eye doctor periodically to prevent minor issues from turning into major problems. If you’re due for an eye exam, turn to Eric G. Stocker, OD in Amherst, OH. For almost three decades, this provider has been meeting the optical needs of families throughout Lorain County. With flexible hours—including Saturday appointments—they make it easy to get the vision care you deserve. To request an appointment, call (440) 988-4419 or reach out on their website
