Aside from anchovies, pineapple is perhaps the most polarizing pizza topping. Some people love it, while others simply loathe the idea. If you have taken sides in the debate, you may be interested to know more about the subject. Below is a guide to the history of pineapple toppings and why it is so controversial.

What Is Its History?

Pineapple on pizza is most well-known as one of the toppings on a "Hawaiian pizza." These typically feature pineapple, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and either ham or bacon. However, Hawaiian-style pies derive neither from Hawaii nor from Italy, the birthplace of pizza. Rather, it was created in Canada during the early 1960s by an Ontario pizzeria owner named Sam Panopoulos. His restaurant focused on American dishes, but he tested dishes from other cuisines, as well. His Hawaiian pizza, named so because the canned pineapples he used were labeled as coming from Hawaii, caught on with customers, and word of it spread throughout North America and beyond.

Why Is It So Controversial?

Pineapple is the only fruit that is a common pizza topping, and many people do not like the combination of sweet and savory. However, other people enjoy the mixed flavors a lot. For instance, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and chef Gordon Ramsay have publicly stated that pineapple does not belong on pizza. On the other hand, Canadian President Justin Trudeau, socialite Paris Hilton, and singer Justin Bieber really enjoy the combination.

Another reason for some people's disdain is that pineapples are acidic, and so is the tomato sauce. Combining multiple acidic food sources can result in tooth and gum sensitivity, acid reflux, stomach aches, and even kidney stones. Meanwhile, diners who do not experience these unpleasant side effects may not understand why others avoid pineapple pizza. If you are on the fence, remember that the fruit contains many important nutrients, including vitamin C, bromelain, phosphorus, zinc, calcium, and manganese. These regulate bodily functions and promote health.
