Hydraulic cylinders are most often used in heavy construction equipment, manufacturing machinery, and civil engineering. However, these different applications require various types of cylinders. Luckily, D & M Hydraulic Sales & Service in Waipahu, HI, has been the island’s most reliable hydraulic supplier for over 30 years. Their inventory includes several types of cylinders, and their staff helps clients choose exactly what they need.

4 Kinds of Hydraulic Cylinders

1. Tie-Rod

In a tie-rod cylinder, threaded steel rods are connected to the barrel to keep the two end caps in place. There can be as few as four rods or as many as 20 depending on the barrel’s diameter and operating pressure.

2. Welded Rod

hydraulic cylinderAs the name suggests, a welded rod hydraulic cylinder has end caps that are welded directly to the barrel. This compact design comes in handy when used with mobile equipment, but it requires special tools to take apart. Repairing the cylinder in the field is inconvenient, but that drawback is often overruled by the benefits of internal bearing length.

3. Telescopic

A telescopic design is employed for longer-than-average stroke lengths. The design incorporates a number of steel tubes with progressively smaller diameters. They rest within each other so the stroke length can extend as needed.

4. Single-Acting

A single-acting hydraulic cylinder provides force on only one side of the piston. The piston rod of the cylinder extends from one end as the pump forces oil into the hose. It employs the most basic operation and design and is most often used in light industrial and commercial applications. This system works well for lower capacity jobs without providing unnecessary force.

The different methodologies used for these hydraulic cylinders are often based on the industries and functions they serve. It’s important to choose the right type to optimize your equipment.
