A hydraulic actuator uses hydraulic power to generate mechanical operation. It consists of a hydraulic cylinder, piston, spring, stem, and supply and return lines. But the cylinder is arguably the most crucial part of the actuator, as it houses most of the system's components. You should be aware of common signs of cylinder breakdowns or malfunctions so you can have the actuator repaired as soon as possible and prevent long-term damage or work delays. Here are a few signs to look for.

How to Tell If Your Hydraulic Actuator Needs Repairs

1. Banging Noises

An actuator will generate some noise when in operation, but a loud banging can indicate air in the hydraulic fluid. During the natural processes that occur in any hydraulic system, air bubbles will significantly compress or expand, producing a banging noise. The sound can also be a sign of cavitation, which occurs when there isn't a sufficient amount of fluid getting to a circuit. Either situation needs to be repaired before it can cause further damage.

2. Slow Performance

If you've noticed the actuator is losing power or slowing down, it may indicate an internal leak. A leaking hydraulic cylinder will need more time to rebuild pressure, slowing its performance. Many people try to compensate for this slowdown by increasing power to the unit, but this won't fix a leaking cylinder. While it will temporarily speed up performance, the cylinder will continue to degrade, and the uptick in power will cause more wear and tear on the actuator.

3. Increased Temperature

Cylinders often get hot when generating hydraulic power, but they should never exceed about 80 degrees. If they do, a problem needs prompt attention. In many cases, the temperature increases because of internal leakage, with high-pressure fluid likely leaking out of the piston seal. Overheating can cause lasting damage to the system, so repairs should be a priority.
