3 Types of Industrial Pumps
Industrial operations require the right equipment to function at the highest level. However, if your business relies on the use of pumps, it can be challenging to know which variety is "right." Though their primary purposes may be similar, these units aren't identical in their design. Learn more about how popular options work to determine which one is the best for your needs.
Common Types of Industrial Pumps
1. Centrifugal Pump
The centrifugal pump is one of the most popular designs used in industrial settings. As the name indicates, it relies on centrifugal force to move liquids. The device accomplishes this using an impeller, or a rotating blade, to generate suction force.
They can be operated using an electric motor, and are usually best suited for fluids with low viscosity, including water, thin oils, paint, and lacquer. The higher the particle concentration, or the "sludgier" the liquid is, the harder it is to move.
2. Positive Displacement Pump
This device moves fluid by creating different levels of pressure to generate a pushing and pulling effect. Once in motion, this can push fluids through pipes and pathways at a steady rate.
This effect is accomplished by expanding the cavity where the liquid is being suctioned from, and contracting the cavity where it's being fed through. Rather than an impeller, this pump typically uses a piston attached to a crankshaft. They're useful in situations where constant flow is required, such as when hydraulic power is used to run engines.
3. Magnetic Pump
While it's somewhat similar to positive displacement models, there's a fundamental difference in the magnetic pump. By using the force of magnetism, this device can operate without the need for a mechanical shaft. In this case, a cylindrical shell is covered in magnets, which make contact with another set of magnets attached to an impeller.
These pumps are reliable for moving heavier fluids such as thick oils and mud. They're also handy for use around electrical equipment or other areas where no leaks are permitted, as these devices are virtually leak proof.
