Many industries use centrifugal pumps to move fluid like water or thin oils. These liquid-movers play a critical role in keeping your business going, so it’s essential to know when they need attention. Here are three signs it’s time to call a repair professional.

How to Tell When an Industrial Pump Needs Service

1. Leaks

Leaks can cost thousands of dollars of lost fluid and hours of work. Seepage may be caused by corrosion, aging, loosened seals, or temperature fluctuations.

If you spot a leak, turn off the pump and use a wrench to tighten the seal’s fasteners. If this doesn’t work, you may need a new gasket or mechanical seals to prevent fluid seepage around the joints.

2. Lower Flow

pumps Oahu HICentrifugal pumps rely on impellers to convert rotational energy into energy that travels through a fluid. If the impeller doesn’t rotate at high speeds, it won’t move the liquid at the desired rate. To fix this issue, you may need a new impeller.

Also, check around the pump joints for leaks. Seepage may indicate a gasket needs a replacement to increase the fluid flow. Clogged suction lines, inlets, discharge lines, or impellers can also lower the current and potentially lead to engine failure if it works too hard. Get a new intake strainer to prevent mud, sediment, and other debris from causing these issues.

3. Unusual Noises

You should be familiar with the sounds a pump makes during regular operation. If you notice rattling or rumbling, vibration from changing liquid pressure is likely shaking the impeller or pump housing. Turn the pump off immediately if you suspect these issues to prevent the pressure change from breaking the joint seals and damaging the impeller bearings.
