When you relocate residences, renting a moving truck can make it much easier to transport belongings to your new home in one trip. Packing the vehicle properly can protect your furniture and moving boxes by keeping them from shifting while in transit. Here's how to load your moving truck to prevent items from becoming damaged.

How to Pack Your Moving Truck

1. Use the Right Packing Materials

Packaging supplies can protect your items from impact and pressure while in the truck. Use moving boxes made from corrugated cardboard with reinforced corners for optimal protection. Wrap fragile items in paper or protective wrap, and fill any empty space in boxes with packing peanuts to prevent the contents from making contact with one another and breaking.

2. Consider Weight

Once you finish packing, move the heaviest boxes, furniture, and appliances into the truck first. This prevents heavy items from putting stress on lightweight and fragile ones. Place medium containers over heavier ones, and put the lightest boxes on the top.

Evenly distributing weight can prevent stacked boxes from falling and damaging other items. It also makes the truck easier to drive. Place heavier items toward the cab and along the walls and lighter ones in the middle.

3. Load Furniture Strategically

Save space by placing couches and loveseats in an upright and vertical position and disassembling tables and headboards. Make the most of the available room by loading smaller boxes in any open areas beneath the furniture.

You can also nest boxes within bookshelves. As you load furniture, place large pads around dining chairs, dressers, and cabinets to protect them from scratches and dings.

4. Use Protective Padding & Straps

Wrap straps around your cargo to prevent it from shifting. You'll notice rails or D-rings on the interior walls of the truck, allowing you to secure vinyl straps over your load in sections. You can also wrap straps around the end of the load to prevent it from sliding backward and colliding with the rear doors.
