4 Numismatic Organizations All Coin Collectors Need to Check Out
By Coins Plus
As a coin collector, there are hundreds of resources you can use to further your love for and knowledge of your hobby. You may take to the Internet, browse your local library, or visit your nearest Coins Plus location. To ensure your experience is well-rounded, however, our expert coin dealers suggest also joining a reputable numismatic organization. Not only will it help you learn more about your collection but it will also give you the opportunity to connect with other numismatists.
Coin Plus’s Top 4 Numismatic Organizations
This first organization is geared specifically to coin collectors in southwestern Ohio. For over 75 years, the Cincinnati Numismatic Association (CNA) has been a driving force in the area’s coin trading scene. They accomplish this feat mainly through their monthly meetings held either at the Groesbeck Public Library or our downtown office at 225 E 6th street, Cincinnati, OH. There, local collectors, dealers, and numismatists gather to share both their knowledge and their passion. The CNA also publishes a monthly newsletter called The Cincinnati Numismatist, complete with valuable tools and updates.
In 1938, an editor for Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine and a few members of the Chicago Coin Club had a breakthrough idea. Someone, they said, should host a yearly conference where coin dealers and collectors from the central states could come together, sell their wares, and discuss their hobby. Their dream became realized in 1939 when they formed the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS). Each year since, this innovative group has organized a numismatic conference, now located in Schaumburg, Illinois where collectors can meet to trade as well as attend educational seminars. For those interested, this year’s event will take place from April 26 to April 29.
While the first two organizations cater to specific areas in the U.S., this last one serves the entire country. Headquartered in New York City, the American Numismatic Society’s (ANS) goal is to “promote and advance the study, research, and appreciation of numismatics.” Not only do they manage a comprehensive coin collection but they also regularly hold lectures and seminars. Their website itself is also a wealth of knowledge as it contains links to hundreds of publications for coin collectors of all experience levels.
Located in Colorado Springs Colorado, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) is one of the two national numismatic organizations available to collectors. The ANA also sponsors two of the largest numismatic conventions of the year and publish a monthly magazine for their members. Additionally, the ANA offers a Summer Seminar for numismatic education. You can learn more about this dynamic organization by visiting their website at money.org.
