As different coins have come and gone from popular usage, coin collecting has remained both popular and lucrative. But what you may not know is that there is a fascinating history behind the hobby that all coin collectors should know about. This tale demonstrates not only the integral role coins have played in various civilizations, but also how they continue to fascinate new generations.

Coin Collecting: A Hobby for the Rich

Scholars have dated the first coins back to Greek, Chinese, and Anatolia civilizations. It is unclear which culture minted their coins first but, as modern history shows, this type of currency has remained a key piece of commerce.

Early coins were made of precious metals, meaning the first coin collectors were wealthy and hoarded them purely for their material worth. The first noted coin collector was Caesar Augustus of Rome, who gifted rare coins to his friends. Collecting, however, stayed relatively obscure until the 14th Century when it emerged again as a hobby for the wealthy. Italian poet Petrarch, Emperor Maximilian, Pope Boniface VIII, and Louis XIV were all notable coin collectors. The elite equated rare coin collecting to collecting famous works of art, so they proudly displayed their pieces and sought to preserve their rarity.

Modern Coin Collecting

Additionally, rare coins became more accessible during this time, and collecting became a mainstream hobby. Scholars and other numismatists began hosting conventions, forming societies, and publishing books to create an organized community of coin collectors. They also created global valuations that coin dealers follow to this day. With these provisions in place, coin collecting became a hobby for individuals from all walks of life to enjoy.
