The Elephant (Wo)man

Joseph Merrick, 1862-1890 was known as the “Elephant Man”. He had deformities that manifested themselves as he grew. Born looking normal, he soon began to exhibit the abnormal deformities that forced him into a life of social seclusion save for his “job” as a sideshow.

John Hurt portrayed him in the 1980 movie. Here Miss Liberty is shown with a die crack emanating from her mouth extending to the rim of the coin.
