Compared to other regions, North Carolina's winters are fairly mild. However, even though there may not be as much snow and ice to contend with, the colder temperatures and occasional storms mean that farm equipment still needs to be prepared for the winter months. Taking care of a few simple tasks now ensures that your tractor will work when you need it and will help you avoid the need for tractor repairs. Use the following guide as a checklist to keep your equipment in top condition throughout the season.

How to Protect Farm Equipment in the Winter

1. Keep the Fuel Tank Full

Whether your farm equipment runs on diesel fuel or gasoline, condensation can develop in the tank and damage the engine over time. To avoid this damage, make sure the tank is full before you place the vehicle in storage. Since diesel fuel can freeze when temperatures drop, it's recommended to add fuel additives to protect the tank throughout the winter, as well.

2. Check Fluids

Leaving contaminated fluid in the tractor can contribute to deterioration and excess engine wear when you use the machine again. As such, before putting your farm equipment into storage, check fluid levels in the engine and hydraulic systems. If the fluids appear dirty or contaminated, or there are signs of foaming and condensation in the tanks and lines, the fluids should be drained and replaced. It's also a good time to add antifreeze to the radiator as well. However, some older tractors are water-cooled, so instead of adding antifreeze, the water should be drained and replaced.

3. Perform an Inspection

Cracked or leaking hoses, gaskets, caps, and fittings can allow condensation to build in the tractor engine. To minimize this risk, it's a good idea to inspect all these mechanical parts and replace any that are damaged before storing your tractor. Hoses are especially susceptible to dry rot over the winter, so check them carefully for signs of deterioration. Now is also a good time to check and replace filters (oil and air) as needed and lubricate fittings and hinge points using the grease recommended in the farm equipment owner's manual.
