A landscaping tractor is a versatile and useful tool, but it usually requires a considerable financial investment. It is therefore important to keep it in good condition and extend its life span as long as possible to avoid potential tractor repairs. Here are a few maintenance tips to get the most out of your equipment.

A Guide to Maintaining a Tractor

1. Change the Oil Regularly

Your tractor's engine oil lubricates moving parts to reduce friction and helps dissipate heat to prevent overheating. Old oil starts breaking down with use, and over time it becomes gunky with dirt and condensation. It cannot lubricate well or remove heat under these conditions. To avoid problems, replace the oil according to the machine's owner's manual, or at least every spring after removing it from storage.

2. Check the Tires

Tractor tires undergo considerable wear and tear, so it's important to inspect them regularly to ensure they are in good condition. Keep them filled to the pressure recommended in your owner's manual, and make sure the treads do not show excessive or uneven wear. Treads should be at least an eighth-inch deep and spread evenly across each tire. Tires should not contain any thorns, shards of wood, or nails or show any brittleness or discoloration, which are signs of dry rot.

3. Wash Frequently

Dirt, mud, and grass clippings collect on the tractor and can damage the finish. To keep it looking its best, wash the tractor every week or two two remove debris and grime. If you use a power washer, be sure to use the lowest pressure setting and keep the nozzle 18 to 24 inches away from the surface. Otherwise, rinse off with a garden hose, and scrub the tractor with a sponge or clean cloth and gentle detergent. Dry thoroughly before returning it to the garage or shed. For best results, cover it with a sheet or tarp between washes to prevent dust accumulation.
