Winter may be knocking on the door, but it’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s lawn. Come spring, you’ll be dreaming of bright green grass that never wilts. Developing a plan and buying the right lawn care equipment will make your dream a reality.

How to Plan Next Year’s Lawn Now

1. Use Natural Fertilizers

You probably know you need to fertilize your garden, but it’s important to fertilize your lawn, too. There are many commercial fertilizers, but most are full of chemicals rather than natural materials.

Luckily, there are natural fertilizers available, some of them already in your home. If you compost your food scraps and grass clippings, they’re great for your yard. Manure is another fantastic natural fertilizer.

2. Aerate

The process is easy. You’ll just need to go to a store that sells lawn care equipment and purchase a handheld aerating tool. Use it to punch holes about three inches deep throughout your lawn. You only need to complete this process once or twice a year to see results. Aerators are available as attachments for riding mowers and tractors as well.

3. Water Correctly

Most people either barely water their lawn or overwater it. Keep your grass healthy by watering it deeply and less often. This means you should soak it in about one inch of water once a week.

If you notice that some areas aren’t getting as wet, this probably means these patches are at risk of yellowing. When the first 3-4 inches of soil are dry to the touch, it’s time to water it again.
