Modern garage doors feature photo eyes. These are special sensors that help with door opening and closing. If you recently purchased your first home or have only worked with manual overhead doors in the past, get a quick course in these features in the guide below.

What to Know About Garage Door Photo Eyes

What do they do?

These sensors are installed about 6 inches off the floor on either side of the overhead door. They emit invisible beams connecting one eye to the other and cause the door to stop closing when something disrupts their contact, such as a car, box, tool, or individual. Sensors feature LED lights indicating that they are operational.

What are their benefits?

Overhead doors weigh hundreds of pounds held up by springs and cables. Old, worn, or damaged doors can cause severe injuries and property damage if they fall onto individuals or assorted objects, such as vehicles. Photo eyes were invented in reaction to a federal mandate concerning garage door safety in the 1990s. By preventing the door from closing in the event of a beam interruption, the sensors protect individuals and property.

How can I maintain my door’s photo eyes?

Check the sensor lenses about once a month for debris accumulations. Use a microfiber cloth to remove dirt, dust, spiderwebs, and leaf matter, as dirty photo eyes cannot send out safety beams. If there is severe dirt and grime buildup, use a manufacturer-recommended mild cleaner to wipe down the lenses. Avoid abrasive or acidic solutions that can etch the glass and interfere with beam signals.

What are signs of a problem?

The photo eyes must be aligned to function properly. If you are not sure whether the sensors are working, place a cardboard box under your open garage door and try to close it. Should the door continue to close and crush the box, the photo eyes need cleaning or adjusting.

The LED lights typically blink when there is a blockage or misalignment issue. To realign your photo eyes, gently move their pivot brackets to see if the LED lights return to normal. Simply loosen the bolts keeping each bracket in place, and carefully move one sensor up and down and from side to side until the light comes back on. If one or both sensors continue to blink, contact an overhead door specialist.
