Fleas are common in pets, including cats and dogs, and can easily spread throughout the home. Since timely treatment with pet care products is the only way to control an infestation, you must know what to look for to protect your animal.

How to Know When Your Dog Has Fleas

1. Constant Scratching

pet careWhen fleas bite the skin, they leave behind substances that produce irritation. This could cause your furry friend to frantically scratch and bite themselves to alleviate itchy sensations. Pet care products, such as liquid drops or anti-flea shampoos, will provide relief.

2. Red Patches

The substance that fleas produce can also cause allergic reactions in some dogs. These usually appear as bright red rashes along the skin. The rashes may also have raised bumps, which are signs of allergic dermatitis

3. Small Dots

A flea is typically around an eighth-inch long and reddish-brown in color. While their size makes them difficult to spot, carefully parting the animal’s fur could reveal one or two dots moving over their skin. Dots could also be blood from puncture wounds or scratching.

4. Loose Fur

Dogs may start losing hair and fur if they have fleas. Skin irritation from the bites and constant scratching can cause clumps to fall off. If you notice more pet fur on carpet and upholstered furniture, coupled with the other mentioned symptoms, check the animal for fleas.
