A "shock" occurs when the human body comes into contact with an electrical current, which subsequently passes through the body. While you might receive the occasional mild shock from your electrical installations without an issue, significant or repeated experiences can be dangerous for your home and health. Below are tips for avoiding these situations.

How to Avoid Electric Shocks

1. Keep Electrical Items Away From Water

Refrain from handling appliances or electronics with wet or damp hands, as water is a conduit. Keep anything that uses electricity away from water sources as well, and do not take an appliance out of the water if it falls in a sink or tub without cutting the power first. Instead, visit your electrical panel and shut off the power to the connected circuit. Then, unplug the appliance in question before recycling it at the appropriate facility. If you believe the item can be salvaged, have an electrician examine it.

2. Use Outlet Plug Covers

Since babies and children are naturally curious about everything around them, including electrical installations and related accessories, they can stick their fingers in exposed outlets and sustain injuries. Plastic plug covers make outlets tamper-proof to help you maintain a child-friendly, safe residence.

3. Install GFCIs

Consider Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) for all of your household outlets, including exterior outlets. They are mandated in the kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms of new construction houses. GFCIs sense ground faults, or electrical current leaks, that can result in shocks and more serious injuries and redirect the electricity.

4. Be Careful With Cords

Always work with coated cords, as non-insulated wires can shock you. Take care with your extension cords as well, such as looping instead of knotting them in storage to prevent insulation cracks and potential shocks. Avoid overloading your outlets to prevent short circuits, shocks, and frequent breaker trips.
