Your car’s muffler is the most exposed part of the exhaust system. Because it's located so close to the ground, dirt, deicing salt, and other particles tend to get stuck to the metal. When moisture is present, this can lead to significant rust buildup and corrosion. Luckily, by following a few basic auto maintenance steps, you can prevent this damage and keep your muffler in good shape.

How to Prevent Rust on Your Muffler

1. Clean Regularly

The dirt and debris that accumulate on the muffler and vehicle undercarriage cause oxidation by trapping moisture against the metal. To prevent this, make sure to wash your vehicle’s undercarriage each time you clean the rest of the car. After spraying off dirt and debris, apply a degreaser or mild cleaner to the muffler.

2. Take Longer Drives

Some muffler rust is the result of moisture inside the exhaust system. The only way to eliminate moisture trapped inside the muffler is to ensure the exhaust system gets hot enough to evaporate it. Most mufflers won’t get hot enough on drives shorter than half an hour, so take the scenic route once a week or so to fully eliminate the moisture.

3. Paint the Muffler

One less conventional method of protecting the muffler is to apply high-temperature paint. This acts as a protective shield against moisture and debris, much like your vehicle’s auto body paint.

Applying a wax coating to the paint will extend its life span for added protection. However, wax needs to be applied often since it wears off quickly.
