Vehicles with a manual transmission use a component called a flywheel, which is a metal disc situated near the clutch. It works with the clutch to transfer power between the engine and transmission while shifting gears, allowing your vehicle to reach odometer speeds. Over time, the flywheel may develop problems that interfere with your vehicle's performance and necessitate auto repairs. Here's how to tell when this part needs servicing.

How to Tell When Your Transmission's Flywheel Needs a Mechanic

1. Vibrations

The clutch pedal stops the flow of power from the engine to the transmission when pressed, and it resumes the flow of power when released. If you feel vibrations while stepping on the clutch, this may indicate a warped, misaligned, or damaged flywheel.

Vibrations that occur while releasing the clutch may result from faulty spring mounts. An auto repair technician can adjust or replace the flywheel or install new spring mounts to restore smooth operation.

2. Slipped Gears

Gears slip when you shift to a higher gear without power transmitting to the wheels. This can happen when the flywheel wears and becomes thin, preventing it from making secure contact with the clutch disc. Replacing the flywheel can promote proper shifting and successful gear engagement.

3. Clutch Drag

Clutch drag occurs when the clutch fails to release when you take your foot off the pedal. This may occur when the pilot bearing fails and prevents the flywheel from maintaining the engine rpm.

When this happens, you might notice grinding noises while attempting to change gears. The worn or damaged pilot bearing will likely need to be replaced so that the clutch can release normally.

4. Burning Odors

A smell of burning in the vehicle cabin typically stems from problems with facings within the clutch. Facings are resin deposits that sit between the clutch and flywheel for the purpose of reducing noise.

If they rub against these components, they may generate excess heat from friction, producing an odor that resembles burning rubber or toast. Since this often happens due to a warped, misaligned, or damaged flywheel, an automotive technician may need to replace the part.
