"I don’t write many reviews. It’s just not in my nature to hurt a struggling business, or to wear out someone who might just be having a bad day. When I do take the time to write a review, I either rave about someone doing a fantastic job and deserves praise, or I warn other consumers about scams so that they might avoid getting ripped off. In this case I am doing both… My son who just graduated from Denison University thought it a good idea to have his Chevy Tahoe checked out before driving it home to California. He took it to Coughlin Chevrolet of Pataskala, explained his situation and 24 hours later they advised him that his Tahoe needed close to $3000 in work. According to their estimate, both front and back brakes were shot and needed complete jobs including new rotors. He needed new tires too…not that they were worn out, but because there were just “old” and showed signs of “dry rot”…4 new tires costs around $800. Plus, they suggested we address a bunch of other things too. When I landed in town for his graduation and was given the news, I thought we should get a second opinion. We picked up the car from Coughlin Chevrolet and they charged us $178 for their diagnosis, but of course, if we moved forward with all $3000 of their recommended work, that number would come off the top. I Googled reputable independents and found one in Newark, Brown’s Transmission and Auto repair. I told them the same thing…that we are driving this vehicle to California and wanted to make certain that we addressed any problems before the trip. Brown’s offered us a 27 point inspection FREE... they’d check the brakes, tires, hoses, everything. A day later they advised me that, in fact, my brakes were actually NOT shot—in fact, the fronts were fine with 50% of the pad left, and the back axle just needed pads and the rotors turned (not new rotors). They inspected the tires and said they were fine too! Brown’s owner told me that he wouldn’t have a problem with one of his own kids driving on them to California. All said and done, I saved nearly $2200 by going to Brown’s. I highly recommend that you be careful trusting your repair estimates from Coughlin Chevrolet in Pataskala…it cost me $178 to learn that lesson. BTW, before submitting this review, I called the service manager at Coughlin and left 2 voicemails. Needless to say, he never called back."... more
